Mahavira

Mahavira

This is one of the great specimen which helps us to link up the missing history of the Nadars with some of the greatest Saints and rulers of India. This particular sculpture of Saint Mahavira is found installed in a famous temple at Nagercoil in the Kanyakumari district. It is noteworthy that on the left hand side of this Saint, a few feet away, is depicted the mother goddess of 'Santors', Mahakaali, in the same temple. There are evidences that the Chera dynasty (Villavas) honored this Mahavira (Jain) tradition almost to the end of the 19th century A.D. It is unfortunate things have taken an ultimate different turn in the 20th and 21st centuries falling prey to the trends of Sanskritisation.

Can the researchers unearth some of the hidden truths of history?
